On Saturday qualification runs were held on a 30 by 80 meters-sized area and eight of the entering 41 riders were selected for Sunday’s finals on the start-, and finishline stretch of the famous Hockenheim-racetrack. These qualification results also determined the starting order for the finals and as the leader of the quail, I had the advantage to start as the last rider in the finals, allowing to study and check out all the other riders and see their judgings before I’ve had to go and show my own run. That allowed valuable upfront information; I could make up my mind on how much risk I’d need to take in order to remain top of the rankings, compared to the other riders.
After seeing especially Pasierbek, Desbonnet and Sagnier riding on a really high level it was obvious that I would have to take full risk in order to win. I’ve also been going for my latest, freshest trick – a 180 brake slide roll back – in my first run, even though I am not too solid with it, yet, and I ran danger of going down in my run.
But it did work out! Even extended to “no hands circle wheelie”! Yeah, that was a strong push for my motivation and confidence and the rest of my first run went easy-style with almost no mistakes. This gave me the lead after heat one and qualified me for the superfinals of the top four guys, which were again Rafal Pasierbek, Sebastien Desbonnet and Thomas Sagnier.
Riding time at the superfinals was again four minutes, enough to show a broad variety of tricks, but also enough, to run into lots of mistakes, which I’ve obviously tried hard to avoid. To me personally, my second run hasn’t been the most difficult one out of us four super-finalists, but it’s been smooth, stylish and hardly baring any mistakes. In the total rankings, this again brought me the highest score and I could again claim victory with a huge advantage in points over my fellow competitors!
Thomas „Blade“ Sagnier unfortunately tore a knee ligament by showing a backlflip off the (wheelie-ing-)bike. I hope you’ll get well again, soon … and pull more of those backflips. All the best, Blade!
